Silent Potty Training Amidst the Chaos of the Holiday Season

***for my son, so you will know and so I will remember how this happened***
11/29: 18 months exactly! You have been showing signs for a while now that you are interested/aware of your bodily functions. For some reason today I decided that we were going to try going diaper less!  I've been thinking about it for a while, and have procrastinated this decision due to two main reasons. 1.) you can't say potty or pee-pee, you can only sign it.  2.) The chaos of the holidays are amongst us. Can I devote the time you need with everything else that i need to do this time of year.
However today is different, maybe it's because your 18 months, or maybe it's because I also met your father 8 years prior. whatever it is there is just something different about today.

Day 1: I leave you bottomless with only a shirt and leggings on for most of the day.  Except when we have to go out at that time we put on soft pants. This morning you signed potty to me, I sat you down, read you "Dora's Potty Book" and you pooped.  I make sure you sit on the potty before we have to leave the house and you pee.....YAY.  We do the pee-pee on the potty dance clap and you love it!  When we got home from bringing your sister to school you took a nap, and woke up dry. Today was primarily a 50/50 mix of me asking you if you had to go potty, and you telling me when you had an accident. Then showing me where it was and helping me clean it up. I kept questioning myself if this was too soon every time you had an accident and reassuring myself that it was the right decision every time you told me you had to potty and then would go. You did great!

Day 2: Only 3 accidents today. I don't have any underwear on you as I think the elastic in them creates a similar sensation that a diaper does, plus i don't have any yet.  We go to the potty at set intervals such as when you wake up, before we leave the house, and anytime that it has been 2-3 hrs since you've last gone.  I kept reminding you that you don't have a diaper on and you have to tell me when you have to go potty.  We go to food shopping for an hour and then to costco & Christmas tree shoppe later on you did great. We brought our travel potty seat since we were going to be out for a while I wanted to be prepared.  I tried to have you go in the car....you were not having that. Then i tried to have you go in costco on the Winnie the Pooh potty folding seat, and you weren't having that either. Yet you didn't have any accidents, you seem to only have accidents when we are in the house.

Day 3: Only 1 accident today!  Yay it seems as thought potty training is similar to labor, not so fun at times but rewarding in the end.  We played for a while on the playground and then spent most of the day home.  I've grown very fond of the sound of little feet pitter pattering towards me, stopping and waiting for me to look at you so you can sign potty to me, and then run off to the bathroom.  Yet what you impressed me the most today was that you started to pee, said pee-pee for the 1st time, stopped yourself and then 5 mins later went and finished of the potty.
I feel great about helping you attain this Independence. Not to mention that i don't have to wash your cloth diapers.  Well as many of your diapers since I still have you in them at night time.

Day 4: More of the same. Your grandfather is giving me flack about you not wearing any underwear, or running around in just leggings but whatever.  You had one accident to day which you got pee on your pants and in your crocs.....you didn't like that at all!

Day 5: I need to get some things done today so since it's Saturday, daddy's going to be the main man when it comes to your potty training.  Who I need to reassure that you don't need to have a diaper on when you go out of the house. Don't worry little man I've got your back!

Day 6: (12/4) you have been doing wonderful! You are only having 1 IF ANY accidents a day. And tonight you refuse to wear a diaper to bed.  So I double layered you sheets & mattress protectors in case you have an accident I only have to remove the dirty sheets and not make the entire bed and we'll see what happens.

Day 7: Last night you did have a small accident but I was able to change you and your sheets with out fully waking you.  You had no accidents today, and once again refused to wear a diaper to bed. So I think we are going to have to do with you what we did with your sister. Which is bring you to the potty in the middle of the night.  Hopefully you'll sleep through it like she did. We'll see!

Day 8: Last night was a success. I tried to bring you to the potty around 11:00 you sat there asleep and nothing happened.  By 3:00 am i was awoken to you whimpering so I brought you to the potty 1/2 asleep and you went.  Yay no accidents, and you went back to bed fairly quickly.  When i ask you if you wear diapers you point your index finger, rock it back and forth and say no, no, no.  So I'm declaring we are officially done with them!

*thank you Gia for being my "been there done that" mom/friend. It was from all of our conversations and laughs that we've shared that I was able to help my son achieve this!
